Shel Silverstein

We read a few Shel Silverstein poems for English class, but "Deaf Donald" was pretty much the favorite.  They just loved the sign language (although it took a while for them to get it!).

So how does this poem make you feel?!  We talked about feeling happy and sad.

Speaking of English, what is the plural and possessive form of our last name?  I'm still not sure!  But neither is Kevin, and he's had the name his whole life!

  1. Kevin is how old & has a college degree & doesn't know English rules for his name? I'm surprised. What did Phoenixville schools teach him? You're exempt because you haven't had the name as long! Still, he should have taught you! Here goes...

When you say, "All the Metzes are not going to the wedding", the rule is to add 'es' for the plural noun as the word ends in a 'z'. (Certain other ending letters follow this special rule also.) If you say, "The whole Metz family is not going", the noun is 'family'.

When you say, "Kevin's dog loves him", that's possessive & correct following the easy rule. But when you say, "Kevin Metz' dog loves him", you need only the apostrophe & not the 's' because of the special ending letter 'z'. It's like, "Kris' cats love him", using the special rule again. "Kris Baxter's cats love him", follows the easy rule.

For me, these rules were taught in grade school. I'm sure you both had English in high school & college. Maybe just watch how you form your sentences if you're unsure. Helpful?

  2. Yeah some of those rules seem odd to me though! Oh the English language. Good thing pretty much no one cares anyway..!
